OLD DOG LEARNS NEW TRICK

I have just recently become a runner. Last time I ran was probably highschool (I graduated in 1979). I tried running a few times as an adult, but kept getting terrible shin splints, or more accurately, anterior compartment syndrome, which is often confused for shin splints. The problem was that I was told many years ago that my running style was wrong and I should run more full-footed. In highschool, I ran on the balls of my feet, which made me pretty fast. Anyway, after years, and years, and years of not running, I began to be inspired by many of my patients who were running. Some did half marathons, some became full marathon runners, and many of these did so at a later age. So, here I am, 50 years old, and I decide to take up running again. I began the first week of April, 2012, and ran on a treadmill with my old style of running (on the balls of my feet). I only managed about .75 miles, but had no pain. I have been diligently working on my running, increasing my time/distance at a sensible pace. Yesterday (5/8/12) I hit a personal record of 3.5 miles! My average time prior to that was 10 minutes per mile, yesterday, I was a little slower and averaged 11 minutes per mile. Not too shabby I think. My goal is to do a half marathon around my next birthday in the fall.

You are never too old to exercise, if you do it correctly!
